Who Is Your Hero?

Updated: May 18, 2022

On today's feast of Our Lady of Fatima, May 13, I am posting a hero story.

The story of Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco is a story of heroism in that these children have undergone struggles and challenges to be able to speak the truth.

According to a professor of literature and author, Joseph Campbell, all hero plots follow the same pattern. In the mythical world, there are Hercules, Odysseus, and Prometheus among others.

There are also modern day super heroes in the likes of Iron Man, Thor, Spiderman of Marvel Superheroes. Then there are the classical heroes in Harry Potter, Frodo in the Lord of the Rings, and Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games.

Then there are real life heroes in our lives - our parents, teachers, firefighters, and so on.

I believe that there is one true hero, and that is Jesus.

And then, there are people called to live lives that go beyond their families. Their paths go deeper than our average hero's journey, like Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco some 100 years ago, and to people in this life who continue to speak the truth, live a selfless life, and walk the narrow road.
