Early this year I was invited to give a talk on the Marys in the Bible. They are our Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, Mary Clopas and Mary Salome. Since another speaker was going to talk about Mother Mary, I focused on the four other Marys, specifically Mary Magdalene.
From the early church to this day, Mary Magdalene has remained a mystery. Was she the repentant sinner that she is believed to be by the Western Christian churches? Or was she the reputable woman who followed Jesus as believed by the Orthodox churches?
On her feast day today, let us remember that whoever her real identity was does not matter. She followed Jesus from the time she was healed of the seven demons - from his ministry, passion, crucifixion, death and to his resurrection.
Like her, let us always keep Jesus close to our hearts.
