On Peter and the Cock Crowing

Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm. And they said to him, “You are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?” Again Peter denied it. And immediately the cock crowed.

- John 18:25-27

Many more times than I can count (and admit), I have found myself in similar situations.

When eating at a restaurant, I find myself saying grace before meals hastily. When talking with people, I sometimes shy away from talking about God. When praying the rosary, I find myself keeping the rosary inconspicuous. Is it really because Jesus tells us not to pray so people can see, or because I am ashamed to show people that I pray the rosary?

There is no hiding from Jesus. He knows, as it had been with Peter.

So how do we redeem ourselves? With three simple but powerful words — "I am sorry."
