Years ago, I was opening a jar of orange marmalade for my toast. The cap would not budge. Not a millimeter. I put the container upside down in hot water. Then I tried to pry the cap with a knife. It still would not budge.
The following morning, I pried the cap again with a knife. I put the container upside down again over a saucer of hot water. I twisted and turned to no avail.
On the third day, the cap squeaked and opened.
Little by little did the trick.
Over the years I’ve learned that this trick doesn’t only work with jars, it works with many other things, most notably in relationships.
If we greet our family members cheerfully when we see them first thing in the morning, I think that it would make their days (and ours!) brighter. If we give someone a random hug at home, we will probably get a hug back. These little things make a huge difference in our relationships.
What if we tried to do that with our Lord every day? What if we greeted Him every morning when we wake up? That’s what I started doing years ago, and guess what? I feel him greet me back in my heart.
And that always made my day special.
